WORLD-FAMOUS ARTWORKS GO ON DISPLAY ACROSS NEWPORT IN NATIONAL GALLERY TRAIL – Isle of Wight News
Life-size reproductions of some of the world’s most famous paintings are now on display across Newport as part of a major touring exhibition from the National Gallery.
The National Gallery’s ‘Art On Your Doorstep’ trail officially launched on the Isle of Wight this week, bringing 18 large-scale replicas of iconic artworks to locations around the county town.
The free outdoor exhibition, which runs from Tuesday 6th May until Friday 30th October, has been designed as a fully accessible, step-free one-mile trail through Newport’s streets, alleyways, squares and harbourside.
Visitors can discover reproductions of works by legendary artists including Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and J. M. W. Turner.
Alex Minn, Isle of Wight Council’s service director for community regeneration and economy, has said:
“It is incredible to see reproductions of world-class art arrive on the streets of Newport, transforming familiar places into an open-air gallery that everyone can enjoy.
“We’re proud that the Isle of Wight is one of just a handful of locations across the UK chosen to host this national exhibition.”
The Isle of Wight is one of only 7 locations across the UK chosen to host the exhibition during 2026.
The artworks have been placed in locations selected by community groups and a local school, with many chosen to reflect the character and surroundings of where they are displayed.
Among the highlights are Van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers’ in Castlehold Lane, Monet’s ‘The Water-Lily Pond’ on the High Street and Turner’s ‘Rain, Steam and Speed – The Great Western Railway’ at Newport Harbour Office.
The trail has been secured through the Shaping Newport partnership, which brings together the Isle of Wight Council, Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council and the Newport Business Association.
Fiona Capewell, clerk at Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council, added:
“This trail is a fantastic celebration of creativity, heritage and community collaboration.
“Secured through the Shaping Newport partnership, Art On Your Doorstep shows how working together can enrich the town, encourage people to explore Newport in new ways and create memorable experiences right through to the harbourside.”
Locations hosting the artworks include Newport Minster, Quay Arts, St Thomas Square, the Riverside Centre and Newport Harbour Office.
