A Scots firm paid a special tribute to Billy Connolly as they welcomed the latest truck to their fleet.
Blackwood Plant Hire in Stewarton, Ayrshire, bought a new T Cab truck and had its exterior hand painted in honour of the comedy legend.
The company now have three of the hi-tech trucks and back in 2016 had one painted in honour of the TV show Gold Rush. This time they decided to go with a Scottish theme but were initially stuck for ideas.
Speaking to the Record, managing director, Paul McCormack said: “We weren’t really sure what to do so we got the whole team together and had a lot of suggestions but credit has to go to my business partner’s wife Lynn.
“She suggested Billy Connolly and everyone immediately agreed on that, and then it just snowballed from there.
“There isn’t anyone more iconic and he is such a great ambassador for Scotland. I am sure the truck is going to get a lot of attention on the roads throughout the UK.”
The firm say the new truck has already caught people’s attention since they drove it up from England this week and have pledged to raise cash for Parkinson’s UK after Billy revealed in 2013 he had been diagnosed with the disease.
Paul, 41, hopes the comedian hears about their efforts and says it would an honour to meet the Big Yin.
He continued: “Our driver Mark will be driving the truck and he is absolutely delighted with the paint job too.
“I was chatting with him and we decided that we are going to get a QR code put on the door of the unit that will link back to the Parkinson’s UK charity so people can make a donation.
“Hopefully Billy hears about what we have done. It would be a real honour to meet him and show him the truck one day.”
It has been a long process to get the vehicle ready for it to transport the plant hire firm’s machinery to building sites.
After taking delivery of the vehicle last July it took almost a year to carry out all the specifications required but they finally welcomed it to their Ayrshire base yesterday, Thursday, June 6,
Paul added: “We like to make a big deal because they are expensive, specialist vehicles, imported from the Netherlands.
“It has been a long road to get it to this stage. We got the vehicle last year from our suppliers in Warrington and took it to the Truckfest festival.
“Then we had got the floor and panelling customised and the base paint applied, before it was ready for the Billy Connolly tribute.
“The same guy who painted the Gold Rush one – Adam Haden – took on the job and he exceeded our expectations.
“We still weren’t sure how it would look but when he showed us the mock up images we were completely amazed.
“Adam is an artist, not many people could do something as special as that. It took him six weeks to paint the truck by hand with an airbrush.
“I am absolutely delighted with the finished product, it is a real head turner and the feedback we have had from people already has been amazing.”
