Striking artwork at public square wins go-ahead from planners
Shirley shopping precinct to be brightened up by colourful flowers artwork
Eye-catching artwork is to be installed at a public square in Shirley.
Sarah Ashford, of Solihull Council ‘s Visit Solihull team, applied for permission for striking public artwork to go up in Red Lion Square in Stratford Road in July.
In an application to council planners she described the plan as “aerial artwork consisting of leaves and flowers within Red Lion Square”.

Artist impressions showed the artwork would be installed above shops in the shopping precinct between the Lion pub and the Fiesta Del Asado restaurant.
More than 20 properties locally were consulted with no objections submitted during a public consultation which ended earlier this month.
A council report said: “This application seeks to install aerial art work above the paved area within the square area.
“The installation of the artwork is a relatively minor change and considered to be appropriate in terms of its location and context.
“It is considered the introduction of the aerial artwork will assist in improving the appearance of the site, helping to enhance the character and appearance of the area.
“Therefore, when viewed in the context of the site and surroundings, it is considered the proposal would constitute an appropriate form of development and no objections are therefore raised to this proposal on the grounds of design or visual impact.”
On Wednesday, August 27, officer Mark Andrews, the council’s head of planning, design and engagement services, issued a notice granting planning permission.
