Stormtroopers and Daleks redeem themselves by protecting Swindon artwork
Following the theft and removal of works by world-famous street artist Banksy last week, artists in Swindon have employed the services of some of the universe’s most formidable villains to protect works in the town.
The sci-fi villains will be providing security for the work of 20 artists and craftspeople taking part in Swindon Open Studios at the Carriage Works on September 21.
A Family Fun Day kicks off the opening of the exhibition at 11am with children invited to come dressed as their favourite sci-fi character.
Besides paintings, pottery, digital art, photography and jewellery, there will be two children’s book authors exhibiting, and Swindon New College will be demonstrating media make-up as well.
Swindon Open Studios has 130 participants in 56 different venues in and around Swindon this year.
The event at The Carriage Works presents a once-only opportunity for artists to exhibit together in this iconic space. Immediately afterwards, the historic listed building will undergo a £1 million renovation.
The Family Fun Day with café was the brainchild of Mark and Anna Enright who run Podpadstudios.
They jumped at the chance of working with Swindon Borough Council and Create Studios to use the huge Carriage Works space, because they have never been able to exhibit their entire collection of life-size film props under one roof before.
Podpadstudios Terminator-inspired Robot T-1-FNY, steampunk Dalek, Dr Who’s K9, Star Wars R2D2 droids, animatronic dragons, and life-size Batmobile will be joined by The Stormtroopers from MKG who will be fund raising for Prospect Hospice, Swindon.
The event is free to attend, while Swindon Open Studios runs across the weekends of September 21-22, and 28-29.
