New artwork of Imelda May unveiled in Dublin’s Liberties
A new piece of artwork depicting Imelda May has appeared on a traffic control box in the Liberties.
The popular singer is illustrated with the words Mother of All the Liberties, which relates to her current role in the stage play Mother of All the Behans, in which Imelda May stars as Kathleen Behan.
Imelda May grew up in the Liberties, a historic and vibrant area in Dublin.
She often speaks fondly of her upbringing, which has influenced her music and artistic style.
The neighbourhood’s rich cultural and musical heritage played a significant role in shaping her career as a singer and performer.
Imelda May recently shared an image of the new mural on her Instagram.
“I’m so honoured to be recognised by Dublin Canvas in celebrating the living, thank you so much,” she wrote.
The new artwork, created by Steve O’Toole, is titled Mother of All the Liberties and is prominently displayed on Meath Street.
Speaking about the artwork, Mr O’Toole said: “A nod to the hierarchy and history of the women of The Liberties and to Imelda’s current role in Mother of All the Behans.
“Liberties Belle; reflecting on both the immensely proud Liberties-born Imelda and Imelda’s own wonderful piece Liberty Belle.
“Working on my canvas has been an absolute labour of love.
“I’ve met and talked with the best of the best, and have had the pleasure of meeting so many well-wishers, friends of Imelda, and members of Imelda’s family.
“Finally, as I’ve recounted to Imelda, I cannot emphasise enough the outpouring of Liberties love and fondness for both Imelda and her family, which has not only been expressed to me but also extended to me by association.
“I am really going to miss working on this much-loved piece,” he added.
