THE ONE PIECE Aims to Appeal to New Audiences With Updated Visuals for Modern Screens
George Wada, co-founder and president of WIT studio, has stated that the anime remake aims to reach a wider audience, drawing in new fans by improving the animation quality of older episodes and removing the 4:3 aspect ratio (as most modern consumer screens have been designed for an aspect ratio of 16:9). “For young people who are used to watching modern anime thanks to technological innovation, the footage from 25 years ago when the anime broadcast of One Piece started may be difficult to watch,” Wada said. “Both we and Oda have the desire to spread anime to people who don’t know about it, and to the world. THE ONE PIECE was planned as an entry point.”
WIT Studio’s THE ONE PIECE remake adapts Oda’s legendary series from the beginning and will stream exclusively on Netflix. VIZ licenses the manga, describing the first volume: “As a child, Monkey D. Luffy was inspired to become a pirate by listening to the tales of the buccaneer ‘Red-Haired’ Shanks. But his life changed when Luffy accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Devil Fruit and gained the power to stretch like rubber…at the cost of never being able to swim again! Years later, still vowing to become the king of the pirates, Luffy sets out on his adventure…one guy alone in a rowboat, in search of the legendary ‘One Piece,’ said to be the greatest treasure in the world…”
