More than 50 pieces of artwork and other items from Rattlesnake Club to be auctioned
Longstanding, acclaimed Detroit restaurant Rattlesnake Club closed after 36 years of business in June, and next month the high-end pieces of art from the waterfront restaurant are going up for auction.
DuMouchelles auction house in Detroit is facilitating the sales, which include works by Robert Graham, Frank Stella, Robert Schefman and others. The pieces are watercolors, sculptures, etching, lithographs, folk art and even a colorful glass and metal chandelier that hung in the award-winning restaurant, plus chairs, signs and other items.
DuMouchelles’ auction of the 52-piece collection will be online starting Sept. 12. View all the pieces and their opening bids at dumoart.com.
Not every restaurant has such a large collection of art, but the Rattlesnake Club wasn’t the average establishment.
Detroit chef Jimmy Schmidt, who won the area’s first James Beard Award in 1993, founded the Rattlesnake Club in 1988 and sold it to Stroh Cos. Inc., its landlord, in 2010. Current owners closed the Rattlesnake in June citing declining revenues since the pandemic.
