Maltese Artist Reimagines Picnics With Vertical Artwork

September 19, 2025 One Min Read

Maltese artist Keit Bonnici has unveiled Sunset Picnic, a self-initiated artwork that challenges the way people think about nature and public space in Malta.

The piece stems from a simple idea: “I wanted to have a picnic but I couldn’t find a horizontal green. I found a vertical green, so I made a vertical picnic.”

Sunset Picnic reimagines what being part of nature could look like by displacing the traditionally horizontal practice of picnicking onto vertical architectural planes.

Through this act of relocation, Bonnici highlights the scarcity of local ground-level green commons and suggests a new relationship with verticality in Malta’s fragmented urban landscape.

By transforming a familiar social ritual into a visual statement, the work draws attention to environmental precarity while inviting the public to reflect on how Malta’s shrinking green spaces shape our daily lives.

Should more artists use their work to spotlight social issues?
