An inspiring exchange highlighting the intersection of art and cultural representation unfolded Tuesday, October 21, at La Verendrye school (LVS). Local Indigenous artist Kae Maud presented a piece of their artwork to Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew when the Premier visited LVS on a visit to Portage la Prairie. Principal Michelle Laidlaw of LVS asked them to present the Premier with the recent orange shirt that they had designed for Orange Shirt Day. However, Maud’s mom encouraged them to create something more for the Premier.
Maud, reflecting on the experience, shared that their mother played a pivotal role in the gifting decision. Together, they conceptualized a glass painting featuring a star design symbolizing protection and a good life. The colours represent the New Democratic Party and Orange Shirt Day, while the sides incorporate the medicine wheel colours of yellow, red, black, and white. Central to the piece is a Maple Leaf adorned with Maud’s trademark design and Premier Kinew’s name.
When the gifts were presented, Kinew expressed admiration for Maud’s orange shirt, stating ‘it was among the finest he had ever seen.’ Maud’s other gift, the glass painting, evoked a personal connection, prompting Kinew to inquire about Maud’s artistic journey.
“When I gifted him the glass painting and took it out, he looked at it and then he was like, ‘Hey, are you an artist?’ and I was like, yeah. He then said, ‘Have you ever had your art displayed in the Premier’s office in the legislation building?’ I said, no, and then he was like,’ Well, you do now.’ I was in disbelief and thought, whoa. I didn’t think he would put it in his office or something like that. I was very happy.”
The Premier’s offer to display the artwork in his office was a monumental acknowledgment for Maud, leaving her overjoyed.
The emotional impact of this event extended beyond Maud, resonating with their family and former teachers who were present. Their pride in Maud’s accomplishments was palpable, with some even moved to tears. Maud articulated the significance of having an Indigenous Premier, emphasizing the representation it brings to the community and their aspirations for future Indigenous leaders.
“I look up to him. For what he does in the community and it’s extremely awesome that he’s the first Indigenous Premier that was elected.”
This heartfelt encounter not only celebrates Maud’s artistry but also reinforces the importance of Indigenous representation in political spaces, marking a proud moment for Manitoba’s cultural landscape.
