The “North Otago IHC Association Art Exhibition” will showcase artwork created by 20 local artists with intellectual disabilities.
All of the artists will also be part of a national exhibition in Wellington next month that will be judged as part of the IHC National Art Awards.
North Otago IHC association member Noel Joyce said every year “almost all of the artwork” was sold for “really good money”.
“The artists themselves get 100% of all those proceeds from the website, to the art gallery, and the auction house,” he said.
The IHC group attend art classes every week throughout the year.
The Oamaru Mail visited a class this week and spoke to some of the artists.
Lisa Graham said she was enjoying creating her vivid and multi-coloured painting of a dancing couple near a stream. Dan Joyce was painting sunflowers that will certainly give Van Gogh a run for his money. Katie Mcrae was using a balloon technique to paint her next original artwork that she has titled “Red Light”.
Christopher Wright, whose artwork has been compared with British artist LS Lowry in terms of process and who has been runner-up previously in the national arts awards, was happy to be exhibiting again.
Katrina Hewitt was proud of her “Untitled” artwork which will also feature in the national exhibition.
Art class co-ordinator Carine Henderson has been taking the classes with the group for over a decade.
She said there were many rewards but the artwork itself was one.
“It’s great to see the art they make and how proud they are of their creations and the outcomes.”
The exhibition is on at The Loan and Merc, 14 Harbour St next Friday from 5.30pm.
