Local artist captures spirit of Sant Jaume « Euro Weekly News

The countdown to one of the Marina Alta’s most anticipated summer celebrations has officially begun after Ondara revealed the striking new artwork that will represent its Sant Jaume 2026 festivities.

Created by young local illustrator Laura Zaragoza, the image will appear on the cover of the town’s official festival programme and promotional material ahead of the ten-day celebration in July. Town officials praised the artwork for capturing the energy, tradition and community spirit that define Sant Jaume each year.

Presented this week by Ondara Town Council alongside councillors Miguel Gomis and Jordi Ruiz, the illustration blends modern design with familiar scenes from the festival calendar. The colourful composition features references to music, street parties, local traditions and the famous children’s “carretons” activities that have become a hallmark of the festivities.

A celebration of local identity

Rather than focusing on a single event, Zaragoza’s design reflects the wider atmosphere of Sant Jaume and the way the festival brings the whole town together. Families, friends and neighbours can all spot recognisable elements woven into the artwork, giving it a strong sense of local identity.

According to the council, the decision to work with a young artist from the area forms part of a wider effort to support emerging creative talent within the community. Officials said the artwork represents “a fresh and contemporary vision” of the town’s traditions while still respecting the roots of the festival.

Zaragoza explained that she spent time researching previous editions of Sant Jaume and speaking with residents before finalising the design. Her aim, she said, was to create something that instantly reminded people of summer in Ondara.

One of the summer’s biggest fiestas

Sant Jaume is widely regarded as one of the standout summer festivals in the Marina Alta, attracting residents and visitors alike with its packed schedule of concerts, parades, food events and late-night celebrations.

The 2026 edition is scheduled to take place from July 17 to 26 and is expected to once again transform Ondara’s streets into a hub of music and activity. Full programme details are expected to be released in the coming weeks, but organisers have already promised a mix of traditional favourites and new additions.

For many locals, the unveiling of the cover artwork marks the real beginning of festival season — and this year’s vibrant illustration has already succeeded in getting people talking ahead of another lively Sant Jaume celebration.
