Preparations for Galway’s upcoming Climate Festival are already underway with a call having just gone out to Irish artists to consider applying for a grant.
Galway City Council announced that a €5,000 grant will be available to sound artists ‘resident on the island of Ireland’ for the creation of site-responsive artwork for the September festival. You’d need to be a pretty sound artist to be worth five grand.
The Sounds of Climate Change Grant is aimed at creative practitioners working in sound, composition, sound and music, or multimedia to make an artwork for the festival.

“The work will be instrumental in inspiring festival attendees. The brief is to evoke a strong response from the public which can correlate into climate action. Climate Inspirations will be the overarching theme of the festival,” the festival’s organisers explained.
The closing date for applications is Wednesday 3rd July 2024 at 5 pm and the festival will be held across the weekend of 12-14 September.
The city council recently launched its Local Authority Climate Action Plan 2024-2029 with an aim for Galway City to be a carbon neutral city by no later than the end of 2050. Mayor Eddie Hoare cited the Grattan Beach sand dune restoration project as a recent example of positive climate action in the city.
The Plan contains 60 climate actions for the city and 43 actions focused on the recently established ‘Decarbonisation Zone’ in the Westside Area.
Late last year Galway City Council became the first Local Authority in the country to eliminate road diesel in its larger fleet as it transitioned to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as a renewable fuel source.
HVO eliminates up to 90% of net Carbon Dioxide emissions and reduces harmful pollutants such as Nitrogen Dioxide and particulate matter, which can cause asthma and impaired lung function.
In recent years the council’s vehicles have used over 500 tonnes of CO2 annually, the same amount of CO2 used if 300 people flew from New York to London and back. This will be reduced to 51 tonnes a year.
