Food waste collection vehicles to be brightened up by children’s artwork

Leader of the city council, councillor Matthew Brown, said: “Starting kerbside food waste collections in Preston has been a vital step in our goal to make the city a cleaner, greener place to live, while reducing our collective impact on the environment.

“We hope that this design competition will inspire young people to get involved with recycling food waste at home and understand the impacts that wasting food can have on our environment. We are looking forward to seeing what unique, bold and colourful designs are submitted and proudly displayed on our wagons in the near future!”

Design guidelines have been released explaining how the colourful and eye-catching design must showcase the benefits to the environment of food waste collections.

The competition can be entered by any primary or secondary school-age child in the Preston City Council area. A primary and a secondary design will be picked to go on the food waste vehicles.

Prizes for the winner include an Amazon Fire HD Tablet, £50, a Hobbycraft voucher, a bug hotel and a trophy to celebrate their achievements. Prizes will also be awarded to two runners-up.

Full design guidelines and how to enter, as well as entry forms, can be found on the city council website.

All entries must be in by Sunday 31 May.
