Dragon Ball Super’s Toyotarou Draws New Artwork of Goku & One of His Best Rivals
Dragon Ball Super artist Toyotarou has illustrated all-new artwork of Goku vs. Jackie Chun, widely regarded as one of the greatest fights and rivalries in the franchise.
The October 2024 edition of V Jump was released on Aug. 20, 2024, revealing a new “Goku vs. Jackie Chun” illustration by Dragon Ball Super‘s Toyotarou. Via X (formerly Twitter), the illustration was made following the “Goku’s Best Bout Poll” on May 9 (Goku Day). Goku vs. Jackie Chun came in first place, earning a stunning visual of him facing off against the elderly (but clearly built) fighter, Jackie Chun. Readers can check out the artwork and Toyotarou’s comment below; the poll received 21272 votes overall.

Dragon Ball Super Artist Toyotarou Recreates Goku’s Fight Against Jackie Chun
Toyotarou’s comment read, “I also love this bout! There are gags and a variety of techniques during the fight that can only be seen in the early parts [of the manga]. It was a great match that left me excited until the end, with Jackie’s experience and Goku’s talent. My love for Jackie made me obsess about drawing his pose!” Ranked below Goku vs. Jackie Chun were Goku vs. Frieza (Namek Arc), Goku vs Demon King Piccolo, Goku vs Moro, and Goku vs Vegeta (Saiyan Arc).
Given the decision to split the Dragon Ball manga into two halves, not only in the anime series but also in VIZ Media’s volume releases in North America, some fans remain unaware that Jackie Chun was actually Master Roshi’s alias in Dragon Ball. Before the World Martial Arts Tournament, the normally balding Roshi went as far as to glue a wig onto his head and removing his iconic sunglasses as a disguise. As Goku and Krillin’s rival and teacher, he feared that his students would lose interest in fighting, entering the tournament to continue to push the pair further. Roshi would eventually claim victory over Goku in the finals, cementing one of Dragon Ball‘s greatest battles and rivalries.

While Toyotarou’s designs have proved divisive for some fans, many await his artwork through the regular “Toyotarou Tried to Draw” series, birthing new artwork of Dragon Ball and other iconic franchises monthly. Last month’s edition coincided with SDCC, revealing a full-color Goku render. Meanwhile, in May, the popular artist opted instead to homage the Toriyama-designed Chuji Wu from Square Enix’s Tobal No. 1 game. Toyotarou’s Dragon Ball Super is currently on hiatus but was confirmed in April to eventually return.
