Camden college marks 170th anniversary with new mosaic artwork
Jason Browne, a learner at WM College, was behind the final design of a new mosaic artwork to mark the 170th anniversary of the Camden institution.
The mosaic was unveiled by staff, governors and community leaders. (Image: WM College) The college was founded in 1854 as Working Men’s College. The sign, now installed at its Crowndale Road entrance, was unveiled during a special event at its historic library.
Mr Browne said: “Before I found WM College, I was feeling lost.
“But from the moment I walked through the doors, I felt supported and seen.
“This mosaic represents that—growth, opportunity, and a second chance.”
The six-foot mosaic was commissioned by Dipa Ganguli, principal and CEO of WM College. It was created through a collaboration between students on the college’s illustration course, tutor Steve Mepsted, artist Tessa Hunkin, and the Hackney Mosaic Project.
It features a Tree of Life, lightbulb, and community symbols to reflect the college’s values and curriculum.

Mr Dawber said: “What WM College does is about giving people a second chance, a new opportunity, and a path to succeed.
“This college has been a vital part of London’s story for 170 years.”
The event also included a personal letter of congratulations from the Prime Minister, Holborn and St Pancras MP Sir Keir Starmer, recognising WM College’s enduring contribution to lifelong learning and social inclusion.
