Three Art Auctions at Bonhams to Feature American Art
Bonhams is set to hold three auctions of American fine art later this summer.
The three sales include one live auction—California and Western Art—and two online-only sales, the Art of Hawaii and American Art.
California and Western Art, taking place Aug. 6 in Los Angeles, will be led by a still life by Franz Arthur Bischoff titled Roses, which is estimated to fetch between US$300,000 and US$500,000. Known for his floral paintings, Bischoff has been referred to as “King of the Rose Painters,” and he painted Roses sometime after he moved to Southern California in 1906, according to Bonhams.
Another highlight of the California and Western Art sale is The Sea, Laguna by Guy Rose, which has a price estimate of US$200,000-US$300,000. Rose, who is one of a few California-born plein-air painters, spent time in the French art colony of Giverny with Claude Monet and later used the principles of French Impressionism in his works depicting his home state. Rose only practiced in California from about 1914 until he had a stroke in 1921, and likely painted The Sea, Laguna around 1915-16, according to Bonhams.

The Art of Hawaii sale, held from July 28 to Aug. 7, will be led by two modernist paintings by Chinese-American artist Hon-Chew Hee: Three Artists (John Young, Pablo Picasso and Self-Portrait), 1976, which is estimated at US$30,000-US$50,000, and Good Table, circa the 1950s, which has a price estimate of US$25,000-US$35,000.
Other Hawaii art highlights include “volcano school” painter David Howard Hitchcock’s Kainalu, Kailua Bay, O‘ahu, Hawaii, 1930, and Before Darkness, 1962, by Betty Ecke (Tseng Yu-Ho), who is known for her dsui hua technique, assembling handmade paper with metal leaf. Both works are estimated at US$20,000-US$30,000.
Highlights of the American Art Online sale, which will be held from July 19 to Aug. 8, include Wolf Kahn’s Bad Weather Brewing, Cedar Springs TX, 1985, (estimate: US$12,000-US$18,000), Study for Jockey on Horse, 1984, by Ernie Barnes (estimate: US$12,000-US$18,000), and American Precisionist painter Charles Demuth’s Beach, 1916, (estimate: US$10,000-US$15,000), which is a small watercolor depicting the shores of Provincetown, Mass.
