Bursary launched in memory of ‘remarkable’ Glasgow School of Art photographer

Lanarkshire born Harry Kerr has been described as a ” remarkable figure” in the world of fine art photography.

In May 2022 the Glasgow School of Art alumnus and former staff member sadly passed away following a short illness, rocking the Glasgow and Irish cultural communities.

Harry, originally from Coatbridge, was not just a photographer, but a “catalyst for creativity and a mentor to many”. His wife Martha hopes to continue his “legacy” through the Harry Kerr Memorial Photography Bursary. This bursary is particularly aimed at supporting less fortunate aspiring photographers and artists.

After moving to Donegal over 20 years ago, Harry and wife Martha made Buncrana their home where they founded ‘The Memory Factory’ – documenting significant moments in the lives of many locals over the past two decades.

Harry made a lasting impact on the local arts scene and wider communities in both Glasgow and Donegal, with tributes pouring in after his passing.

A respected Technical Instructor within the school’s Fine Art Photography Department, Harry was known for his generosity – sharing his photographic skills and knowledge. He was keen to generate opportunities for students and young artists and hoped to create a space for collaboration and growth – making the memorial bursary rather fitting.

Shortly after his passing, the Derry Journal reported that outside the arts world, many in the Buncrana community will have known Harry simply from his walks around local beaches and forests, where he was always easy to ‘spot’ coming with his precious Dalmatians.

A GoFundMe has been set up in a bid to raise €25,000 which would fund five bursaries of €5,000 per year for the next five years. Contributions will directly impact the next generation of photographers, providing them with the financial support they need to achieve their ambitions.

Wife Martha McCulloch wrote: “Together, we can keep Harry’s memory alive and continue his mission of fostering creativity, technical skill and artistic excellence.”
