Dandara commissions local artist for historic sculpture in Hawkhurst

Independent housebuilder Dandara has recently partnered with a local artist in Hawkhurst to install a sword-designed sculpture on The Russetts development in Kent, as an on-site landmark celebrating the village history.

Artist Simon Probyn, known for his recycled and new steel original sculptures, designed ‘The Sail’ which has been placed at the entrance of The Russetts. The creation depicts the history of the Hawkhurst’s Smugglers Gang, with two overlapping swords representing the notorious fights in the 16^th century. 

With a range of local artists in the area to choose from, the housebuilder partnered with Simon due to his historic passion. The partnership reflects a long-standing historic piece on the development and something residents can continue to admire throughout the years.

Simon Probyn, Commissioned Artist, commented: “Having created original sculptures for homes and gardens all my life, I was honoured to have my ‘Sail’ piece commissioned by Dandara and installed on its new development in Hawkhurst. The backstory of the design is a great representation of the villages’ routes and I hope soon-to-be residents and the local community enjoy the artwork!”
