Creative Space Avon highlights artists’ Judge Sarah Schuster
On April 27, 2024, Creative Space in Avon hosted its seventh annual women’s art show, an exhilarating evening that brought together art lovers and showcased exceptional talent. The event was marked by a competitive spirit as several artists were chosen for awards by the esteemed juror, Sarah Schuster.
Judy Kean, the gallery’s owner, made a thoughtful choice in selecting Schuster as the event’s judge. Schuster’s reputation as an artist is well-established in Lorain County, particularly through her work at Oberlin College. Her extensive background and credentials in art made her an ideal fit for the role.
Born and raised in Boston, Schuster’s journey in art began under the influence of her father, who taught broadly liberal classes. However, Schuster’s passion lay firmly in the arts. Her classical training in drawing and painting emphasized the figure, along with rigorous technical instruction in anatomy and traditional painting techniques. Reflecting on her education, Schuster characterizes it as “unusually conservative for the 1970s,” a time when most art programs were rebelling against the history of art.
Schuster began her teaching career at Oberlin College in 1988, quickly gaining favor with artists and gallery owners for her dedication to art and education. As a juror, Schuster evaluates artwork based on quality, craftsmanship, appeal and originality. She understands gallery visitors often focus on the finished pieces without realizing the extensive work and understanding required in the creation and presentation of art.
Artists in the Cleveland area and beyond look forward to more art shows where Schuster’s expertise and discerning eye can help highlight the best in artistic talent. The seventh annual women’s art show at Creative Space in Avon stands as a testament to the vibrant and skilled community of female artists and the importance of having knowledgeable and experienced jurors like Sarah Schuster to guide and celebrate their efforts.
