Meet Bernard Galane | Drummer, Artist, Investor, Entrepreneur – SHOUTOUT LA
We had the good fortune of connecting with Bernard Galane and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bernard, why did you pursue a creative career?
I was pretty much born into music. My parents were very supportive and sent me and my brother to music classes at a very young age. We must have been around 4 or 5 years old. We were introduced to different instruments, basic rhythmic and harmonic training and playing together with other kids. I actually started out on piano, but followed my brother and switched to drums, which became pretty much an obsession for me. We had a great drum teacher and ended up in a successful Latin Rock / Pop band which even landed a song in the European hit parade. It was a magical time! We were already touring and playing big venues at around 10 years old. We were pretty much professional child drummers.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As I mentioned earlier, me and my brother played in a very successful band as kids. I remember playing big venues and opening stadium shows for major artists like Bryan Adams, Chesney Hawks and Extreme. We had a song in the charts and played big European Music TV shows. All this was highly motivating and I knew exactly that I would pursue music as my career. During my teens I worked extremely hard and practiced up to 12 hours per day and became one of the busiest drummers in my home town Vienna before I even had a drivers license. Mastering my instrument taught me the value of self discipline. I really believe that self discipline is the key to anything you want in life. I apply the same principles I learned through practicing to all other areas of life as well.
What sets me apart from many of my peers is that I saw the collapse f the old music industry coming and reacted to it by starting my own drum company. I basically became an entrepreneur and learned everything about marketing, running a company, finance, the stock, fine art market – you name it. I ended up connecting many different dots into a unique career.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh there so many cool places in Los Angeles! I would definitely go to my favorite Hollywood bar, the Black Rabbit Lounge on a weekend and here some live music. Then of course the Magic Castle. The Record Parlour is the best Vinyl Shop in Hollywood. A drive down PCH is a must see, hiking up Runyon Canyon or to the Griffith Observatory or just strolling around in Hollywood. There is so much!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Oh I definitely pick my mum Brigitte first! She is the most supportive and loving mother I could have wished for. She was always there for me. We are very close and I call and visit as often as I can. I am very grateful that I had the opportunity to study and learn something I deeply love from a very early age on. I do not take it for granted! I also had a great drum teacher as a kid who was so motivating and encouraging. My professor at the Conservatory of Vienna was a wonderful person as well. Then there are my drum heroes, Buddy Rich, Dave Weckl, Dennis Chambers, Thomas Lang and many more! Then my finance hero Warren Buffett, my motivation hero Arnold Schwarzenegger. Ah there are many, but my Mama comes first!
