Lauren Sánchez Bezos says the future of art needs investment ahead of Met Gala with Jeff Bezos

Ahead of the 2026 Met Gala, media personality and philanthropist Lauren Sánchez Bezos made a clear case for why fashion and art must be supported together, framing innovation in design as something that depends on serious long-term investment.

Speaking during a pre-event press moment, Sánchez Bezos positioned the Met Gala not only as a celebration of style but as a recognition of fashion as a legitimate art form. She is expected to appear alongside fellow primary donor Jeff Bezos at the gala, underscoring the couple’s increasing visibility in cultural philanthropy tied to the arts.

In her remarks, Sánchez Bezos emphasized the role of the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute in shaping how the world understands fashion.

She credited the institution with helping shift global perception toward viewing designers as artists and fashion as a serious creative discipline. “The Met has always understood something the rest of the world is finally catching up to, fashion is art,” she said.

She also acknowledged the influence of Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, thanking her for her leadership in elevating the Met Gala into one of the most influential cultural events in the world.

She pointed to emerging research supported by the Bezos Earth Fund, including developments in sustainable textiles such as lab-grown silk and reconstructed cotton fibers.

According to Sánchez Bezos, these innovations are not abstract ideas but active projects already reshaping the industry. She emphasized that designers should not only be celebrated for their present work but supported with the tools that will define what comes next.

“The future of that art deserves investment,” she said. “That’s why the Bezos Earth Fund is backing scientists, reimagining what fabric can be, sustainable silk grown in labs. It is happening.”

Closing her remarks, Sánchez Bezos shifted to a more personal tone as she introduced tennis icon Venus Williams. She described Williams as a figure who has reshaped expectations within her own field, drawing a parallel between excellence in sport and excellence in creative industries.
