Artwork from trash: Maradu municipality pushes for cleanliness | Kochi News
Kochi: As part of Swachh Survekshan campaign, Maradu municipality unveiled a creative ‘waste to art’ installation beneath the flyover at Kundannur Junction to promote cleanliness, environmental protection and recycling. The installation was created using discarded cables and other waste materials collected from different parts of the municipality. The artwork portrays a sanitation worker sweeping the streets, crafted entirely from multicoloured cables. Through the installation, the municipality aims to spread awareness about proper waste management, sustainable practices and the importance of keeping public spaces clean. The project was headed by councillor of 22nd division Shibu P P. According to him, the idea emerged after he noticed many unused cables piled up at a collection point. He then coordinated with the municipality’s health wing and sanitation workers to transform the waste into an artwork. Shibu said that despite repeated warnings from the municipality, service providers continue to leave cables discarded along roadsides and public spaces. Municipality chairperson Ajitha Nandakumar, who inaugurated the installation, said the initiative not only encourages environmentally responsible behaviour but also recognises the vital contribution of sanitation workers in maintaining the city’s cleanliness. Municipality officials also stated that strict action would be taken against those found littering cables within municipal limits.
