Potential new Banksy artwork appears in London
It would be the artist’s first public artwork since September
A fresh piece of street art, speculated to be the latest work from enigmatic graffiti artist Banksy, has appeared, showing two figures lying on the ground and gazing up at a towering London skyscraper.
A child featured in the work points to the sky, donning a beanie hat and wellies, while another individual in a bobble hat is sprawled beside the child on a pavement beneath the Centre Point building near Tottenham Court Road in central London, reports the Daily Star.
The work, which appeared on Monday (December 22), appears to be made in a style similar to previous artwork created by the elusive Banksy, who has kept his true identity under wraps. Though the believed-to-be-Bristol-born artist has yet to claim it as their own.
Nearby, the same artwork has also appeared on the side of a building a few miles away in Queen’s Mews in Bayswater.
Prior to this, Banksy’s last claimed artwork was a mural depicting a protester sprawled on the ground clutching a blood-stained placard, while a judge, decked out in wig and gown, towers over him, brandishing a gavel, sprayed onto London’s Royal Courts of Justice building.
Banksy posted confirmation that the provocative piece was genuine on social media shortly after it appeared in September. The artwork was promptly concealed by officials, with efforts made to remove it.
Many interpreted the artwork as a commentary on the arrest of hundreds of individuals for showing their support for Palestine Action, which campaigns to end the Gaza genocide, by wielding placards at protests.
Palestine Action was outlawed by the Government as a terrorist organisation in July, following activists’ damage to RAF planes.
The court service confirmed its legal obligation to preserve the character of the building due to its listed status.
