New artwork installed at Winchester’s Theatre Royal
Play to the Crowd’s “Inside Outside: Art on the Street” was placed on Tower Street earlier this week.
It was created to “bring the inside outside” and celebrate the live performances seen on stage.
The artwork, which bridges the Theatre Royal and The Arc, is inspired by the building’s rich heritage and features elements from the auditorium, including the proscenium arch, spotlights, and seats.
The colours were also taken from the auditorium and finishing touched will be made over the next four weeks.

It was designed by Pea Green Design Studio, a Winchester-based company with more than 30 years experience, designing for hospitals, schools, and libraries, including The Arc next door.
The artwork is the final stage of a transformation project on the building that began in 2019, which saw the installation of bi-folding doors to let more light in.
When the artwork is complete, it will act as a colourful seating area outside the building.
The project was finished with the help of Winchester City Council and private donors.
Deryck Newland, chief executive and artistic director of Play to the Crowd, said: “I am proud that Play to the Crowd brings joy and colour to people’s lives.
“Our vision as a charity is to ‘delight and unite’ communities. We hope this artwork does just this. It is for everyone; for the whole crowd. Enjoy.”
Play to the Crowd, formerly Live Theatre Winchester Trust, is a registered arts and education charity based in the heart of the historic city of Winchester, Hampshire incorporating Hat Fair, Theatre Royal Winchester and Playmakers.
