‘Accidental’ artist to host first solo exhibition in St Ives

An “accidental artist” is set to host her first-ever solo exhibition in St Ives.

Birte Hosken, who found her passion for art during the Covid pandemic, will showcase her work at the Carbis Bay Combined Methodist Church on November 9.

She began creating art when the pandemic stripped her of her main hobby, tennis.

Initially, Ms Hosken started by collecting bits and pieces from the coastline near her home, which later became materials for her artwork.

From simple driftwood candleholders and decorated mirrors, she moved on to creating unique wall hangings and mosaic-like pictures, mainly using reclaimed wood.

Ms Hosken said: “Each and every piece of art is totally unique.

“It is quite shocking to find so much plastic on our shores.

“It may be exciting for me and my art, but it is a stark reminder that our seas are in trouble.

“Hopefully, my work goes a little way to raising awareness.

“Yes, the pieces are fun to look at, but there is definitely a deeper meaning to them.”

She also uses oil or acrylic paints to enhance pieces, so they fit into a specific colour scheme.

Many of her creations, which often have a coastal theme, have been sold both locally and further afield.

Ms Hosken is always happy to donate artwork to good causes and is willing to take commissions.

At her sales outlet at a community farm shop in Southampton, Hampshire, she also offers painted tiles and other smaller items for anyone looking for a nautical Cornish-made gift.

Ms Hosken’s solo exhibition, aptly named Get the Drift, will be open to the public from 10am to 5pm on November 9.

There will be a private viewing on November 8 between 6pm and 9pm.

Entry is free, and all the artworks on display will be available for sale, with prices kept under £100.

Ms Hosken noted: “All my fun and colourful work will be on display and be available for sale, just in time for Christmas.”
