This is a story of how a fan creator of the Fallout series landed himself a gig doing artwork for Fallout 76, which we have to assume is the dream of many fan creators out there. And it all started because Bethesda Softworks mistakenly used some of this creator’s artwork in an official capacity, apparently.
Zack Finrock, a fan artist and filmmaker who is perhaps most known for working on the fan film Fallout: Breaking, pointed out on Twitter how a piece of his fanart bears a close resemblance to some artwork in FO76’s cash shop for an item bundle. “I love Fallout 76 and it seems someone on the art team loves my Fallout memes,” he wrote.
The tweet further called out to the game’s creative director Jonathan Rush to ask how to resolve the matter amicably, even going so far as to offer to “draw a newer, better version for [the game’s] Atom Shop image.” This in turn led to DMs between Finrock and Rush in which Rush claimed there was a “mix up with an external vendor” and confirmed the image would be changed.
During the exchange, Finrock once more offered his artwork services, which Rush agreed to on a contract basis. “Apologies for the circumstances,” Rush wrote. “Your great art got confused for the official.” And to further put a cherry on top of this happy ending sundae, the cash shop bundle artwork was swiftly replaced.
