City girl’s artwork appears in Spider magazine

A rising fifth-grader at Fredericksburg Academy and the daughter of Jim Foley and Molly Bowes of Fredericksburg, Magilly has been reading the magazine for several years, since her grandparents gave her a subscription. In each issue, readers are invited to submit original artwork or writing on a specific theme, and Magilly has done that for more than a year, her dad said.

“While the rejection notices have been painful when they come, she has used them to inspire her to keep trying harder,” he wrote in an email. “She loves creating art and reading, so finally being included in the magazine was a very big accomplishment for her.”

In March, readers were asked to submit an original drawing of a helpful mouse. Magilly’s features an adult mouse, sweeping the rug in a cozy living room as a young mouse comes down a winding staircase.

Her artwork appears in the Spider’s Corner section of the July/August 2024 issue of the magazine, which is for ages 6-9 and features short stories, poems, articles and activities by children’s authors and artists from around the world. Hundreds of entries are submitted for each month’s special theme, according to the magazine, and editors pick their favorites.
