Liverpool Cathedral to host new artwork by British artist
The installation, named Helios, will be on display from April 4 to May 9, 2025.
The artwork is a seven-metre-wide illuminated sculpture of the sun, accompanied by a specially commissioned surround sound composition.
Helios provides a detailed, close-up view of the sun, using high-resolution imagery at a scale of 1:200 million.
The artwork captures the surface’s dynamic textures, including sunspots, filaments, and the origins of solar flares.
Liverpool Cathedral has previously hosted Jerram’s installations, Museum of the Moon and Gaia.
To accompany Helios, the cathedral has organised a programme of events.
These include sunrise yoga, storytelling sessions, interactive workshops, and creative activities.
There will also be a Quiet Hour, a sensory-friendly session with reduced capacity.
The cathedral will remain open later than usual on select evenings, allowing visitors to experience the installation after dark.

There will also be ticketed events, Cathedral Lates, featuring live music performed near the artwork, with a drink upon arrival.
The Welsford Bistro will serve a specially curated three-course menu beneath the glow of Helios.
The Cathedral Sleepout, in partnership with The Whitechapel Centre, will allow attendees to sleep overnight around Helios and raise money for the most vulnerable people in the city, including those experiencing homelessness.
Luke Jerram said: “Helios acts as a venue, enabling hosts to create their own programme of sun-inspired events and activities to take place beneath it.
“I hope that Liverpool Cathedral’s exciting programme of events will bring together people of all ages, religions, and backgrounds in celebration and reflection.”
The Very Revd Dr Sue Jones, Dean of Liverpool, said: “Helios is a stunning celebration of the sun’s life-giving power and its significance across cultures and faiths.
“Having this artwork in the Cathedral, especially during the Easter period, gives us a chance to reflect on themes of light and resurrection.
“We are delighted to welcome everyone to experience this incredible installation in our magnificent space.”
