Dragon Ball Super Reveals New Toyotarou-Original Trunks and Goten Artwork
Earlier this year, the popular Dragon Ball franchise unveiled the Dragon Ball Super Interval series — a monthly art showcase designed to tide fans over until the grand return of the Dragon Ball Super manga. Now, official Dragon Ball Super artist Toyotarou has released a brand-new installment starring Goten and Trunks as they appeared in the manga-exclusive “High School Saga.”
This new installment has been published in V-Jump magazine’s “Super-Sized” August Edition, which provides Dragon Ball enthusiasts with a myriad of updates regarding the franchise’s current projects. Subsequently featured on Dragon Ball‘s official site, Toyotarou’s artwork features Goten carrying a weary-looking civilian while Trunks looks on with a satisfied smile. This image effectively captures the duo’s playful dynamic, which is on full display in the manga’s aforementioned story line. Described as a prequel story to the manga’s famous “Super Hero” arc, the “High School Saga” chronicles Goten and Trunks’ efforts to protect the city as local up-and-coming superheroes, “Saiyaman X-1” and “Saiyaman X-2.” According to Dragon Ball‘s website, the magazine also has a special section that provides “the inside scoop on how this action-packed adventure came to be.”

Dragon Ball Super’s Official Artist Will Create New Interval Artwork Until the Manga’s Return
Dragon Ball Super‘s latest chapter, titled “A Legacy Towards the Future,” was published in V-Jump on March 21, 2024 — a few weeks after the death of famed Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama. In the wake of this tragic event, the franchise stated that Super would eventually resume publication, with Toyotarou continuing on as its main illustrator. While Dragon Ball has not yet announced a projected release window for this continuation as of writing, the DBS Interval Special serves as a reassuring reminder that the franchise will live beyond the death of its beloved creator. Until Super‘s official comeback, V-Jump will regularly host new Toyotarou-created pieces, while also providing fans with new details about the featured characters and their respective arcs.
Toyotarou’s Previous Dragon Ball Super Interval Specials Featured Gevo & Gohan Beast
Toyotarou’s first Interval Special featured Gevo, the son of infamous Red Ribbon Army scientist Dr. Gero. The second installment highlighted Gohan’s Beast Form — a high-level transformation that is considered to be Gohan’s ultimate “awakened” form. Gohan wielded this transformation during his clash with Cell-Max, and then again during a highly-anticipated match against Goku in his Ultra Instinct form. Beast Gohan likewise makes an appearance in the 2022 film, Dragon Ball Super:Super Hero. In a published statement accompanying the artwork, Toyotarou clarifies that his Interval version, which features the character with a confident smile, is inspired strictly by Beast Gohan’s film incarnation. “There were reasons for the Cell Max battle to have to be different from the movie — no Gohan Beast smiling scene. I could now draw this fearless smile moment here. And surely, it looks cool when Gohan snaps!” the artist wrote.
