Banksy artwork stolen in London | Art-and-culture News

August 9, 2024 2 Mins Read

Hours after it was unveiled, an artwork of anonymous street artist Banksy was stolen from a rooftop on South London’s Peckham. The image of the satellite dish featuring Banksy’s stencil of a howling wolf had been posted on the artist’s Instagram handle on Thursday.

Later, video footage was retrieved of three men using a ladder to climb the building in Peckham to remove the satellite dish and taking it with them.

This was the fourth Banksy work to have appeared in London in a week. The first was an artwork of a goat on top of a wall near Kew Bridge in Richmond that was first seen on Monday. The following day appeared a silhouette of two elephants with their trunks stretched towards each other, on the side of a house in Chelsea. The third piece, unveiled on Wednesday, depicts three monkeys ostensibly swinging on a railway bridge in East London.

The Bristol-based artist is known to comment on socio-political issues and there is speculation that these recent works from the animal-series might be in response to the recent far-right riots across the UK, or the tense situation in the Middle East.

Incidentally, in March, an environment-themed mural by the elusive artist in London’s Finsbury Park neighborhood was vandalised when it was covered with streaks of white paint. Later, wooden barriers and protective plastic sheets were added by the building owner to prevent it from further damage.

Festive offer

The contemporary artist, who is believed to have been born in 1975, first drew attention in the ’90s for his graffiti and distinctive iconographies. While his identity remains unknown, there are several speculations regarding who Banksy probably is.
