Artwork in Khan Market to spread awareness about antimicrobial resistance | Events Movie News
The wall art has been created by Superheroes against Superbugs (SaS) in collaboration with Delhi Art Street (DSA). The design of the mural was ideated by students in a co-design workshop they attended at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in November 2023. The students put their learning from an AMR awareness workshop in the form of art and craft which was given the final shape by DSA and SaS. The workshop included conversations with experts that helped participants understand not only the scientific basis of AMR but also the role of young people and the public at large in addressing the issue. The design of the mural draws inspiration from classic isometric game designs like iconic Pac-Man and showcases a dynamic battleground where AMR superheroes combat the forces of harmful superbugs. Present at the occasion were Shipra Misra, CEO & MD, CKIC-DRIIV (Flagship programme of the office of Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India) Science and Technology (S&T) Cluster, Dhoya Snijders, Innovation Counsellor, Bart Ooijen, Counsellor for Health, Welfare and Sport esteemed members of Superheroes against Superbugs, Delhi Street Art members and students.
The mural was inaugurated by Marisa Gerards, Ambassador of Netherlands
The inaugural event also featured a creative and thought-provoking street theatre performance by the student group ‘Yatharth’, which highlighted human actions that are contributing to the issue of AMR, as well as attendees sharing their messages on AMR via creative postcards. Addressing the gathering the Ambassador emphasised on the need to educate young minds so that a ripple effect of change can be made. Making young people aware at the right time can help in fighting such health crisis strategically. Superheroes Against Superbugs (SaS) is a public engagement initiative focused on raising awareness about Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in India. Through creative interventions and community outreach, SaS endeavours to mobilize individuals and communities in the fight against AMR.
Ambassador Marisa Gerards further said, “AMR has become a silent health crisis. In 2019, globally AMR caused over 1.2 million deaths as antibiotics were overused in hospitals and agriculture. And even residues of antibiotics have been found in our environment, water and food. This makes treating people with serious infectious diseases very challenging. The Netherlands has a strong national and international policy on Anti-Microbial Resistance and has deployed a One Health approach in the past few years. It includes the risky zoonotic diseases, where viruses jump from animals to us humans. We firmly believe in collaborating internationally to find new solutions, innovate, and discover newer paths to fight the crisis and make the world a better place to live. Just many other areas, we will be working closely with India to Fight AMR by spreading awareness and bringing in policy-level changes.”

Shipra Misra, CEO & MD, CKIC-DRIIV said, “It is encouraging to see our students learning about AMR and engaging with communities to spread awareness. As a science and technology cluster, we are committed to bringing relevant stakeholders together from industry, academia, government bodies, healthcare services and international agencies to collaborate on mitigating the impact of AMR by generating scientific evidence, leveraging deep tech tools for predicting AMR spread, formulating policy actions and building capacity. I compliment the commendable efforts of these young students for engaging in such an important initiative and will be glad to support them in their future endeavours.”
“We see young people as key stakeholders and changemakers in this fight against AMR. So, bringing their ideas on AMR into reality through this mural for public awareness has been extremely fulfilling. We are thrilled to have found invaluable creative partners and supporters in DSA and The Netherlands Embassy to help us further our mission of raising awareness and action on AMR. Partnerships like these bridging science, society, and policy, hold immense potential to drive meaningful change and inspire innovative solutions that benefit both current and future generations” Sarah Hyder Iqbal, Superheroes Against Superbugs.
