Pop-up boost for Wessex artists

November 28, 2025 2 Mins Read

Congratulations to this new artist-led gallery initiative, enhancing the local art scene with regular art exhibitions at Westridge Studio in Highclere and other venues across West Berkshire.

Local artist Helen Grimbleby felt that there was a lack of opportunity in the area for art lovers to connect with professional artists on a regular basis, so she set about creating something new.

As a result, Wessex Downs Gallery opened its doors for the first time in October with a one-day exhibition. Now it is a regular quarterly fixture.

Unlike traditional art galleries, without the overheads of a fixed building, Wessex Downs Gallery can offer gallery quality art more affordably.

“Westridge Studio in Highclere,” says Helen, “where the monthly exhibitions are shown, is a gorgeous converted former chapel.

“Extensively renovated, the venue is dedicated to the arts and wellbeing and offers a beautiful light-filled welcoming space to show art and share a cuppa.”

The gallery currently showcases seven talented professional artists, pictured right .

Helen Grimbleby is known for stunning brushwork in her oil and acrylic landscapes.

Michelle N White captures detailed wildlife and pet portraits in watercolour.

Claire Breitsprecher creates ethereal semi-abstract landscapes which capture the unseen in a variety of mediums.

Pradeepa David has superb technical ability in watercolour across a range of subjects and employs vivid colour and light to great effect.

Adrian Sutton’s work is full of life, energy and colour, focussing on landscape in oils and other media. Veronica Kendik, resident artist at The Base, takes us way beyond the surface with her abstract and semi-abstract paintings full of layers.

Helen Cheetham’s painting is vibrant and expressive reflecting her love of the outdoors.

Wessex Downs Gallery will be open from 11am to 4pm on December 6 , at Westridge Studio, Star Lane, Highclere, Newbury RG20 9AS.
