March 18, 2025 2 Mins Read

It seems local artists continue to dominate Spotify India’s daily top 50 playlist. The newly released Loud and Clear report by the music streaming platform revealed that in 2024 alone, artists from India were discovered 11.2 billion times by first-time listeners on the platform. According to the report, this is a 13 per cent increase when compared to 2023.

The company said that through artist education initiatives, emerging artist programmes, on-ground experiences, and more, the platform has been connecting artists with their fans more deeply than ever before. The report also shows how artists earn money through streaming and distribution of royalties and highlights the rapidly evolving global music landscape.

The streamer has been consistently contributing to the artist economy in India. The company said that since 2022, the number of Indian artists generating over Rs 50 lakh in royalties from Spotify alone has more than doubled. Similarly, in the same period, Indian artists generating over Rs 1 crore in royalties have more than tripled, and over Rs 5 crore have doubled. The report said that two-thirds of the royalties generated in India in 2024 came from Indian artists.

Also, over 9,000 Indian artists were added to global and local editorial playlists on the platform in 2024.

When it comes to languages, royalties generated by Indian artists who were performing in Hindi, Tamil, Punjabi, and Telugu have more than doubled since 2021. Telugu has emerged as one of the fastest growing in popularity in 2024, with a 39 per cent increase in royalties generated globally year-on-year, more than doubling since 2021. Among these languages, the most-streamed genres include Punjabi hip hop, Hindi hip hop, Malayalam hip hop, Punjabi pop, Tamil pop, Hindi pop, Hindi indie, etc.
