Artist’s work celebrates Weston Grand Atlantic Hotel’s history

June 12, 2024 One Min Read

Originally built in 1859 as a private boy’s school, the hotel was launched in 1889 and has been central to the hospitality industry along the Weston-super-Mare beachfront ever since, representing a unique period of history with its Victorian façade, spectacular limestone turrets, and intricate wrought iron details.

Nick Roberts, a celebrated local artist in Weston-super-Mare, is known for bringing his unique vision to his pieces and using it to capture the essence of the key landmarks and buildings on the historic beachfront.

With a dedication to “bring joy” through his art, Roberts uses a distinctive palette of five colours – red, raw umber, blue, white, and black – a nod to artist L.S. Lowry.

Nick Roberts said: “It has been a pleasure and honour to create this piece for The Grand Atlantic Hotel.

It is truly an iconic building which is so well-known and loved by locals.

It was important to capture the intricate details of this magnificent building, and include characters that represent the history of the hotel and Weston-super-Mare.

The original piece has been hung in the main reception area of The Grand Atlantic Hotel. Wayne Entwistle, general manager at the hotel, said: “We are thrilled to have been on this artistic journey with Nick Roberts.

“His artwork has become synonymous with popular landmarks in Weston-super-Mare and we’re delighted to have had the opportunity to immortalise the hotel for future generations and guests to The Grand Atlantic to enjoy.”

Replica postcards of the painting will also be available from the hotel as takeaway souvenirs.
