Fond du Lac Art on the Island and Birky Challenge are this week
Here are the can’t-miss events happening in Fond du Lac this week.
FOND DU LAC – Fine art, from paintings to quilts, will be on display at Fond du Lac’s Art on the Island.
Other events around the county include the Birky Challenge, a blues concert and a musical. Families might want to check out the Old Fashioned Carnival offering games, prizes and fun.
1. Art on the Island features fine art, food
The fine arts of Fond du Lac will be on display June 2 during the annual Art on the Island. The event is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lakeside Park, 555 N. Park Ave.
Some of the art on display and for sale includes paintings, pottery, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, garden art, photography, fine wood art, weaving, quilting and more.
Artists will be at work, art from scholarship winners will be on view, and attendees can bid on donated art in the silent auction. Proceeds go toward the Fond du Lac Artists’ Association High School Art Scholarship program.
There will be live music to listen to and food available to purchase.

2. Birky Challenge routes through Kettle Moraine area
The 14th annual Birky Challenge Memorial Bike Ride is set to take place June 1. Registration opens at 6 a.m. with the ride starting at 7 a.m. Registration also will be open 5 to 7 p.m. May 31 at Holy Family Church, 271 Fourth Street Way, Fond du Lac.
The ride is in of honor fallen Police Officer Craig Birkholz, who was killed in the line of duty March 20, 2011. The name “Birky Challenge” is a reference to workouts Officer Birkholz would challenge other officers to at the Fond du Lac Police Department.
The ride features a 25-, 40- or 67-mile bike ride through the Kettle Moraine area. There will be a pizza dinner at the finish line.
Proceeds will benefit the Wisconsin Rider’s charitable causes, including Sleep In Heavenly Peace and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Fond du Lac County.

3. Cathy Grier is next performer in Great Hall Concert Series
Cathy Grier & the Troublemakers are the featured act for th next Great Hall Concert. It will begin at 7 p.m. May 31 at Thelma Sadoff Center for the Arts, 51 Sheboygan St.
Grier has been a professional musician since 1978, and has opened for Laura Nyro, The Band, Dave Mason and Joan Armatrading. She won an MTV Basement Tape award in 1986, and was a New York City busker from 1999 to 2015. She now resides in Sturgeon Bay.

4. Waupun theater group to present musical ‘Gilligan’s Island’
The Waupun Community Players will present “Gilligan’s Island: The Musical” at Waupun City Hall Auditorium, 201 E. Main St. Show times are 7 p.m. May 31 and 2 and 7 p.m. June 1.
“Gilligan’s Island: The Musical” is a family-friendly stage musical version of the iconic 1960s TV comedy show “Gilligan’s Island.” Shipwrecked on a remote Pacific island, seven castaways build huts and explore their surroundings. They discover strange hieroglyphics in a cave, the weather gets rough and Gilligan foils the best-laid of the castaway’s rescue plans. The show features 18 original songs.
Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors, $5 for students with youth 5 and younger admitted free. Purchase tickets at showtix4u.com. Tickets at the door are cash only.

5. Games, music, pie-eating part of June 1 carnival
Awaken Ministries will host an Old Fashioned Carnival June 1. It will take place from noon to 4 p.m. at Main Street Bistro & Bakery, 5 W. Main St., Waupun.
Included will be interactive games with prizes, live music, a dessert bake-off, a pie-eating contest, face painting, inflatables and a fire truck for kids to explore.
