Texas Artists That Absolutely Love the Legendary Kurt Cobain

April 5, 2024 3 Mins Read

We know there are iconic musicians from Texas & some of them will agree that one of the most important figures of music was the late Nirvana guitarist/lead signer: Kurt Cobain.

Now we’ve already talked about their insane Dallas concert but we want to talk about some Texas musicians who have shown their love & appreciation to Kurt (and some that inspired Kurt himself).

These Texas artists all have made some amazing covers of Nirvana songs

We’ll start off with what people consider is one of the greatest Nirvana songs, “Lithium“.

We’ve seen a few Texas artists performed this song, like Dallas’ The Polyphonic Spree; a version that’s considered to be one of the best Nirvana covers. You might remember this song from movies like The Big Short & Suicide Squad.

Another amazing cover of Lithium was done by another Dallas rock star, Anne Clark, aka St. Vincent. The version that made this one special was she actually performed this version with Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic & Pat Smear FROM Nirvana.

But we can’t talk about covers without mentioning…Posty from Grapevine. Oh yeah Post Malone has made it clear he is a HUGE Nirvana fan; in fact he made it very clear back in 2020 when he & Travis Barker did an entire livestream while performing nothing BUT Nirvana covers in an effort to raise money for coronavirus relief. Come on Posty… do a whole Nirvana tribute album at this point.

Even Texas country artists love Kurt Cobain & Nirvana

Austin’s JD Casper, who you might remember from Season 20 of NBC’s The Voice, showed the world that you can do a bluegrass version of Nirvana and…it works. Take this version of “All Apologies“.

When KLAQ interviewed Koe Wetzel from Pittsburgh, Texas back in December 2022, he revealed that, while he’s a big country artist, that band that got him into rock music was Nirvana.

After discovering Nirvana, he became enamored with grunge music (The Smashing Pumpkins & Sonic Youth). Other artists that were definitely influenced by Kurt are Austin’s Sap & Houston’s Machine Gun Kelly.

Kurt Cobain was also known to other Texas artists too

If you’ve seen the photo of Kurt’s Top 50 albums, then you’ll be quick to notice that bands like The Breeders, Pixies, Aerosmith, Iggy & the Stooges are all there. But there’s a few names from Texas too; like Daniel Johnston from Austin, Texas.

Kurt called him “The best songwriter on Earth” so it’s no surprise that Daniel’s album, “Yip/Jump Music” made the list. The music Daniel made might not be for everyone, but for Kurt, it certainly was.

And of course… we couldn’t leave the Butthole Surfers from San Antonio. In fact TWO of their albums made Kurt’s Top 50 list:

  • Locust Abortion Technician was #39
  • & Pee Pee the Sailor” aka “Brown Reason to Live” was #10.

The Butthole Surfers were one of Kurt’s favorite bands & I’m sure that’s an honor the band still holds dearly today.

Of course I couldn’t leave out the Nirvana tribute bands in Texas;

R.I.P. Kurt. You are forever missed every day man.
