Two artists get Société support as new arts section is launched

October 21, 2025 3 Mins Read

SOCIÉTÉ Jersiaise will have a new section aimed at painters, photographers, filmmakers and other artists – and as they meet for the first time, the charity has announced two young artists who will receive grants to study arts.

Chief executive Rebecca Bailhache said the awards were “a continuation of the Société’s longstanding support for the visual arts in Jersey”.

The Barreau Art Scholarship went to Phoebe Ashton-Barnett, a sustainable fashion innovator at Edinburgh College of Art, helping her to finance her final year collection.

She is planning a project exploring her family history, taking inspiration from her grandmother’s “infamous” dress-up box.

She said: “My graduate collection will be an introspective exploration into family tradition, nostalgia and foolishness.

“The scholarship will allow me to realise my creative vision to the fullest extent and accomplish a highly rewarding final year of study.”

And Jersey-based painter Cristabelle Jégard – who takes memories and emotion and turns them into vivid paintings, often reflecting Jersey’s coastal landscapes – was selected for the Averil Picot Award.

The award is aimed at fine art students. It will help fund her Master’s studies at Camberwell College of Arts in London.

She said she was “grateful and honoured” to receive the award.

Société president Stuart Fell, who was on the judging panels for both awards, commended both artists for their “creativity, cultural storytelling, and dedication to heritage and innovation”.

The new Art, Film and Photography Section is set to have its first meeting at the Société Jersiaise building at 7 Pier Road on Monday 20 October from 5.15pm to 7pm.

Artists, photographers, filmmakers and others with an interest in the creative arts are invited to join.
