Frome artists to showcase work at Wells Cathedral

October 8, 2025 2 Mins Read

Three Frome artists will feature in an upcoming exhibition at Wells Cathedral after being shortlisted in a national art competition organised by Wells Art Contemporary (WAC).

The local artists are Iñaki Susbielles, Andrea Wright and Jane Shepherd, whose work will be displayed in the exhibition at the historic cathedral from 8th October to 1st November.

Now in its 14th year, the open art competition continues to attract thousands of entries from around the world.

This year, 93 artworks were selected for the Gallery in the cloisters, one of which was the painting by Iňaki Susbielles titled Space for Two.

Entering for the first time, Iňaki said, “I’ve always thought it would be fun to have my work exhibited in such a stunning place as the Cathedral. It gives your work the chance to be seen by so many people.”

Her paintings explore themes of intimacy, communication, solitude and happiness.

She said, “I’d let the viewers take what they want. There are always new layers to add on or unfold.”

There will also be 22 site-specific art installations located throughout the Cathedral and gardens, including work from two other Frome artists.

Andrea Wright’s installation, Nervure Longue, relates to the body and its skeletal structure, specifically the ribcage.

She said, “The structure is laser cut to reveal a lattice of elongated triangular spaces which allows light to pass through to create shadow.  As the light moves throughout the day the shadows follow, which I feel resonates with the theme and the site.”

Jane Shepherd’s work, Guardians, will be sited in the Palm Churchyard, consisting of several structures. She said, “Reflecting the historical legacy of our sacred landscape through the local vernacular of standing stones. The installation is formed from textural black clay. Positioned outside, the matt surface acts like a negative space – a shadow or absence of light.”

Chair of WAC Paddy O’Hagan said, “We are absolutely delighted to be hosted again by Wells Cathedral. It is a great privilege to be welcomed back. It is a truly magnificent setting for the exhibition which brings contemporary artists together from across the globe.”
