The Gathering Artist Called Out Over Stolen Artwork
Magic: The Gathering artist Donato Giancola has pointed out stolen artwork in Outlaws of Thunder Junction.
In a March 25 Facebook post, Giancola called out fellow Magic: The Gathering artist Fay Dalton for apparently stolen artwork. The issue lies in one of the two figures on Dalton’s card art for Trouble in Pairs from the upcoming Outlaws of Thunder Junction set, which appears to be stripped directly from art Giancola produced for Cyberpunk 2020: Ravengers, a novel published in 1995.
Resident Evil’s Capcom Snatches Game Publisher of the Year in New Rankings
Metacritic awards Capcom the #1 spot in the review aggregator’s 14th annual Publisher of the Year rankings, dethroning Sony, Sega and Microsoft.
In the Facebook post, Giancolo wrote, “Wow. Nearly speechless, but not speechless enough not to contact a lawyer. Criminal copyright infringement.” Giancolo pointed out numerous instances that appear to be evidence of direct copying and pasting of the Cyberpunk 2020: Ravengers artwork, including “exacting details in the neck, arms, background, and hand which show clear copied structures from my art. Copied and pasted. This is not about ‘similarities,’ this is about direct copying.”
Magic: The Gathering and Wizards of the Coast Continue to Gain Controversy
This is the latest in a series of controversies surrounding stolen art being published in Magic: The Gathering. In 2021, publisher Wizards of the Coast cut ties with artist Jason Felix after his art for the Mystical Archive edition of Crux of Fate was found to have used a copy/pasted image of the Elder Dragon Nicol Bolas from artist Kitt Lapeña’s fan art of the character. This was followed by an incident in 2023 in which artist David Sondred’s art for Wayfarer’s Bauble was found to have used art by Lorenzo Lanfroncini without the latter’s permission.

Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons artist, Denman Rooke, speaks out against Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks’ statements regarding AI.
Outlaws of Thunder Junction is set to bring players to the plane of Thunder Junction, a previously unexplored world that only became accessible to characters with the opening of the Omenpaths — interdimensional portals that allow non-Planeswalkers to traverse the Multiverse. The set will introduce a slew of new mechanics, including Outlaws (defined as creatures with the Assassin, Mercenary, Pirate, Rogue or Warlock subtype), Crimes (which are committed when a player targets an opponent or any of their spells, permanents, or graveyard), Spree (an addition to modal type spells), and Mounts and Saddle.
Magic: The Gathering
Designed by Richard Garfield in 1993 as a card game, Wizard of the Coast’s Magic: The Gathering franchise now also includes video games, novels and comics. Future films and television shows are also planned.
