Users of a popular Nairn riverside walk could soon see a new landmark added to the area as works to install a public artwork get under way.

After a public call earlier this year for design proposals for a new artwork in memory of keen cyclist Jan Nowell – who was based in Findhorn and sadly passed away in 2022 – active travel charity Walk Wheel Cycle Trust (formally Sustrans) has announced the winning submission.

Moray-based artists Mary Bourne and Lynne Strachan — who have previously collaborated for the Cabrach Reconnections Exhibition in Aberdeenshire — will design and create the artwork.

The artwork will aim to create a point of interest along the riverside path, which is part of National Cycle Network Route 1, and will be inspired by the surrounding environment, nature and local heritage.

The piece will be made of Moray sandstone and will be located near the railway bridge, which is made from the same material.

“We settled on a spot just north of the railway bridge where the path is still close to the river and there is a sense of a coming together of the ways,” the artists said.

“Approaching from both directions, the piece will be seen framed by the beautiful arch of the bridge.”

The project is being supported by the Highland Council and has been well received by the Nairn Common Good Engagement Group and local elected members.

The next steps for the project are to submit an application for planning permission, which, if successful, could see the artwork installed in summer of 2026.
