DC President Jim Lee Draws Marvel Characters Again For DC/Marvel Collections

Amalgam Universe DC Marvel

Fans are used to seeing Jim Lee tackle DC heroes like Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, but there’s an entire generation who missed out on the Marvel work that made him a superstar in the ’80s and ’90s. Ever since selling his Wildstorm imprint to DC Comics, Lee has rarely worked for other publishers. He hasn’t officially drawn any Marvel characters since, which makes these retailer exclusive covers even more special. The wrap-around cover not only sees Lee drawing X-Men characters like Wolverine, Colossus and Storm, but also the Punisher, a character the artist first got acclaim for with his early run on Punisher: War Journal.

The
DC Versus Marve Omnibus
collects
Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man

Marvel Treasury Edition
#28,
DC Special Series
#27,
Marvel and DC Present: Featuring the Uncanny X-Men and the New Teen Titans

Batman/Punisher: Lake of Fire
#1,
Punisher/Batman: Deadly Knight
s #1,
Darkseid Vs. Galactus: The Hunger
#1,
Spider-Man and Batman
#1,
Green Lantern/Silver Surfer: Unholy Alliances

Batman/Daredevil

The two omnibus collections are also special in that they are reprinting material that many fans thought would never see the light of day again. In the ’80s and ’90s, it was not uncommon for the two publishers to get together and produce crossover series for their characters, culminating in DC Versus Marvel, the massive crossover from 1996 that saw the two universes going to war. The new century saw a change in attitude for both publishers, and the crossovers ceased following 2003’s JLA/Avengers miniseries.

Jim Lee Is One of the All-Time Great X-Men Artists

The X-Men rush into battle on the fold out cover of 1991 X-Men #1 comic.

Jim Lee returning to draw the X-Men in an official capacity is a big deal, considering the artist became a superstar when drawing the title in ’80s and ’90s. The last time Lee drew the mutants was for the WildCATs/X-Men crossover from the late ’90s, so the new wraparound cover is cause for celebration for many long-time fans. It may be only for a collection of older material, but Jim Lee still proves to be one of the all-time greats with his new cover featuring DC/Marvel characters.
