Illuminate Footscray: Striking artwork debuts on Hopkins Street

A new public artwork will illuminate the night sky in the City of Maribyrnong this winter – Welcome to Footscray, designed by acclaimed Wiradjuri and Ngunnawal artist and long-time Footscray resident Brook Andrew, is a must-see attraction in the west.

Situated on the facade of 88 Hopkins Street, this bold artwork serves as a striking gateway to the Footscray Central Business District and reflects the spatial synergy and ever-shifting essence of its vibrant community. 

City of Maribyrnong Mayor, Cr Cuc Lam said this artwork is a beautiful representation of Footscray’s unique vibrancy and diversity.

“Brook Andrew’s piece will not only brighten our streets but also strengthen our community spirit and pride,” she said.

Commissioned through a partnership between Council and the State Government, Welcome to Footscray is part of a joint effort to invest in artworks within the Footscray CBD. The aim is to enliven community spaces, foster creativity, and deter vandalism.

Of his commission, Brook Andrew, notes, the coloured lights and shapes enhance an optical black and white pattern, acting as a metaphor for the cultural and linguistic diversity in its inspiring space.

 “The changing aspects of this work through day and night will act as way-finder for locals or visitors who love our Footscray,” he said.

Brook Andrew is recognised nationally and internationally for his work as an artist and curator having exhibited in the UK, Brazil, UAE and in major galleries and museums across Australia, including as former Artistic Director of the Sydney Biennale. Wiradjuri language and the striking black and white pattern inspired by traditions of wood carving have been a constant in his work for over 20 years.

A new StreetWORKS Walking Map for Footscray has also been created featuring 26 works by various artists. Among these are nine vibrant new murals supported by the partnership with the State Government, including works by Katherine Gailer, Tom Civil, Hayden Dewar, Justine McAllister, Liv McCarten, Madi Mercer, Abbey Rich & Olana Janfa, Eric Sesto, and Daniel van de Wiel.

The Walking Map can be downloaded below and will be available for free to pick up at Council’s libraries and community centres from July.
