Dementia-friendly art group create artwork at Wrexham church
The work of art, Tree of Life, was commissioned by St Margaret’s Church in Garden Village, and was unveiled by the Mayor of Wrexham, Cllr Beryl Blackmore.
St Margaret’s Church approached local artist Margaret Roberts, who runs Inclusive Arts, a dementia-friendly art group that holds weekly classes at the church, and the idea to create the Tree of Life came to fruition – a symbol that represents both organisations.

The art group consists of those living with dementia and their carers – all members of the group, including volunteers, contributed in some way to the painting, which now hangs in pride of place over the door of the community hall.
The Tree of Life supports how we are all connected to a life so fragile yet with the support of others, those affected by dementia can continue to blossom, enjoy a fulfilled life and create beautiful things.
A diagnosis of dementia does not have to mean that things come to an end – the art group provides a peer support network where members continue to enjoy the hobbies that they had prior to developing dementia.

Some who attend the group had never picked up a paintbrush before, but on joining the group, discovered hidden talents which have been carefully nurtured through the support of artist Margaret and her wonderful group of volunteers.
Heather Collin, chair of Dementia Friendly Wrexham, the organisation which helped to set up the art group, said: “I am so proud to see what this group have achieved. From it’s initial start to provide therapy and respite for those living with dementia and their carers, its has gone from strength to strength, growing in numbers and it is fantastic to see the talent and quality of work being produced.

“The new artwork is a stunning piece that really represents how people living with dementia can live well and still fulfil their passions. It will hopefully be viewed and enjoyed by the local community for years to come.”
