Colourful artwork on house divides opinion

February 16, 2025 2 Mins Read

A new mural on a house in Filton has caught the attention of the local community and beyond with its burst of colour to the neighborhood.

The vibrant work, which features dining mice and a towering feline figure, was painted on the front of a house in Wallscourt Road by the renowned Bristol-based artist Shaun Sepr.

Known for his bold style, Sepr’s latest creation is no exception, featuring bright colors and whimsical imagery.

Tom Hunter, the homeowner who commissioned the mural, moved to the area in December with his wife Cate.

The new mural by Shaun Sepr has been the talk of the neighbourhood

In an effort to bring something beautiful to the street, he commissioned Sepr, who completed the project in just three days last week.

Hunter said the response has largely been positive, with many people stopping by to take photos and admire the work.

Sepr, who grew up in Filton before working in Totterdown, has forged a reputation in the art world, exhibiting his work internationally. He is also a tattoo artist at Welcome Studios in Bristol. His previous murals include the those on Turbo Island.

Despite the positive reactions, the mural has sparked debate on local forums, with some residents expressing mixed feelings.

The contrast between its playful theme and the more traditional aesthetic of the neighborhood has led to varying opinions. While some praised the mural as a much-needed splash of colour, others were less convinced.

One social media user described it as “an absolute joy on the street,” while another pointed out the tendency for residents to voice objections to change, often without offering alternatives.

Shaun Sepr himself has taken the feedback in stride, finding humor in the strong opinions voiced online.

Renowned artist Andy Council, who is well-known in the Bristol art scene, offered encouragement, commenting that the strong local reactions likely meant the mural was making an impact.
