Colchester Library’s art exhibition by care home residents

Twenty-four care homes across Runwood Homes and Sanders Senior Living Group enjoyed a private viewing of the art exhibition at Colchester Library to celebrate their own artwork.

The mayor of Colchester, Lesley Scott-Boutell, unveiled the exhibition and said: “I’m in total awe of the artwork created.”

Several care home residents and representatives joined the mayor in unveiling the unique display.

The creation of the artwork involved engaging closely with the community, including local schools through intergenerational projects.

Kieun Kwon, associate director of wellbeing and dementia, said: “Creating art allows our residents to express themselves and connect with others.

“This fosters a sense of community.”

Many of the homes regularly host children’s visits and offer Dementia Friends sessions for younger audiences, and some homes have collaborated with schools to create artwork, which fostered “valuable connections.”

Sarah Dodsworth from the Wellbeing team added: “This exhibition not only highlights their incredible talents but also underscores the importance of creativity in enhancing overall well-being.”

Residents also enjoyed reminiscing with their families, strengthening connections and creating new, cherished memories.

The exhibition was in collaboration with Harlow Library, and ran in Colchester from August 13 to August 22.
