Whitehaven exhibition space offers platform for artists

January 15, 2026 One Min Read

Whitehaven Town Council is inviting artists, photographers, and collectors to host their own exhibitions in a newly created exhibition space located on the ground floor of the newly renovated Whitehaven News building.

A council spokesperson said: “West Cumbria has a thriving artistic community as well as some exceptionally talented photographers, and this is hopefully a way for some of them to take the next step forward in their hobby or career and to do a full exhibition without any financial risk to themselves.”

The council is also encouraging students of event management to get involved by organising exhibitions as part of their coursework.

Gerard Richardson, deputy lieutenant for Cumbria and a member of the council’s events group, said the opportunity would be available throughout the year.

Mr Richardson said: “To give people an idea of the space, we recently held an exhibition of Robots and Androids and had over 40 display items many of which were full-size items.”

He added that about 20 pieces of A2 artwork or larger would be ideal to fill the space.

The council is open to exhibitions featuring art, photography, or collections of memorabilia.

Exhibitors are welcome to list items for sale, with details on how to purchase from the artist.

Those who do not have enough pieces for a solo display are encouraged to collaborate with others.

To book the space or enquire, email clerk@whitehaventowncouncil.co.uk.
