In an intimate black box theater nestled in Pasadena, a diverse group of professional actors, dancers, and singers collaborates with artists living with Parkinson’s, MS, TBI, and stroke to rehearse for “The Follies,” a groundbreaking project of the Lineage Performing Arts Center. The project aims to shine a spotlight on the extraordinary talent and resilience of neuro-atypical performers, showcasing their creativity and strength.
“The Follies” promises an unforgettable experience. The culmination of months-long rehearsals involving choreography, writing, and theatrical shorts, the performance will be followed by a Q&A session featuring neurologists from USC Keck and Cedars Sinai, providing insights into the intersection of art and health.
At the heart of this celebration is the “Dance for Joy” program, a series of free creative classes catering to adults with Parkinson’s, MS, TBI, stroke, and other neurodegenerative diseases.
Students from the program’s dance classes will showcase original choreography, guided by professional dancer and USC Kaufman School of Dance teacher Patrick Corbin. acting and voice students will join forces with professional actors and singers, presenting original scenes and classic songs, weaving a narrative of empowerment and artistic expression.
“You really can’t watch these performers without being inspired,” Brian Elerding, manager of the program’s acting class, said. “The work in the classes has fantastic depth, and the utter joy that they bring to their art is infectious. We can’t wait to share that with ‘The Follies’ audience.”
“The Follies,” running for 75 minutes and suitable for all audiences, offers $10 tickets, with proceeds benefiting the nonprofit Lineage Performing Arts Center. The endeavor is made possible in part by a grant from the Tournament of Roses Foundation.
